Noted Science Fiction writer, Marta Randall, interviews Science Fiction Grand Master, Robert Silverberg during the 1982 WorldCon in Chicago. Among the topics discussed are his early days of publishing, his working relationship with John W. Campbell, Jr. , his desert garden, his days in fandom, writing the historical novel, Lord of Darkness, and writing the Majipoor series, the sad case of literary SF in the 1980s, and many more things of interest.

And I personally want to thank Robert and Marta for allowing SFOHA to podcast it.

Space Dog Podcast Episode Four-Isaac Asimov Speech

An hour speech with the late, great Isaac Asimov. This speech was entitled “Utopian Change” but he talks about so many things, it hardly matters. Isaac knew how to work an audience, and there’s a nice Q & A at the end of the speech. This was recorded in 1974 at John Hopkins University. From the SFOHA archives, of course.

Space Dog Podcast Episode Two – Scott Westerfeld

The Second Book in the Leviathan Trilogy

For our second show I decided to illustrate that the Science Fiction Oral History Association isn’t just about old recordings. It’s also about making new recordings. On October 28th, Scott Westerfeld was at my local Borders Books and was gracious enough to allow me to record him.

Our first show was a smashing success and I want a thank everybody who helped get the word out. I sent an email to Frederik Pohl about the first show and he reminded me to remind our listeners that he’s got an excellent blog on his own personal history of science fiction. It’s called The Way The Future Blogs. In fact he won a 2010 Hugo for best Fan Writing. Viewing the blog, I saw that November 26th, was his 91st birthday. Happy Birthday, Fred!

Now if you’re a youngish person (or young at heart), you may already know Scott Westerfeld’s books through the popular Uglies Series. These are excellent YA science fiction books. Or perhaps you know him from his newest YA series, Leviathan.

Scott was in town to promote his newest book, Behemoth, which is Book 2 in his Leviathan Trilogy.

The night I recorded Scott, I purchased Leviathan and got it signed, of course. I also located an audiobook version of the book at a local library. Let me tell you between the vibrant writing of Scott Westerfeld, the brilliant illustrations in the book by Keith Thompson, and the masterful audiobook narration of Alan Cumming, I had a highly enjoyable hybrid experience.

Scott’s talk was also very entertaining and enlightening. I hope you enjoy it. The first 45 seconds the sound isn’t very good as I was rushing to set up the recorder. About 45 seconds in, the sound quality is excellent. Scott is talking about how he got his idea for the Uglies Series.
